Every party needs someone keeping the campaign on track. For us, that's Terrence. We asked him 10 questions about his gaming origin story, current obsessions, and collection grails.
What was your gateway into tabletop gaming?
When I was four or five, I went to the Learn to Play Pokemon TCG events they held at Toys “R” Us when the game was first coming out. I earned the Boulder Badge and Cascade Badge, but I don't remember getting the other six.
What game are you most locked into right now?
Grimdark Future is my game of choice right now. I just finished painting some Tyranids from the Warhammer 40,000 starter box that I'm hoping to use in my next battle.
What's a beginner mistake you hate to see?
Gotta thin your paints!
More generally: play how you want. Don't let the meta tell you what you have to do.
What's the funniest thing you've seen at Common Lands?
A young guest came in with a Charmander plush and carried it around the store going, “Char. Char!” I thought that was very funny and sweet.
What board game can you always be talked into playing?
Pokemon Master Trainer. It's not a very good board game, but I think it's a perfect time capsule of what Pokemon was when I was a kid - just Nintendo and The Pokemon Company throwing things at the wall and putting Ash on whatever they could.
And UNO. I think everyone can get down with some UNO or UNO Attack.
What's the crown jewel of your collection?
My favorite collectibles are the Poke Ball, Great Ball, and Ultra Ball replicas from The Wand Company. The look and feel of them are fantastic. The only thing they don't do is move.
I wonder if I could fit a motor in them. 🤔
What's the grail piece you’d add to your collection if budget or reality were no object?
A Base Set Charizard. My Charmeleon have forever remained Stage 1 Evolutions.
What fictional game world would you most like to visit?
Night City from Cyberpunk, either in 2020 or 2077. I'd find some choombas to hang with and have a good time while I could, then delta before my luck ran out.
Who's your all-time favorite Pokemon? Defend your pick.
Electrode. He's fast. He's got a great attitude. And being based on a Poke Ball means he’s even more Pokemon™ than most other Pokemon.
Love / Hate / Exile: Who's your signature partner, who's your archrival, and who are you sending straight to the Shadow Realm?
Love: Raichu
Hate: Pikachu
Exile: Wooper - but really, any and all Ground types.
