How to Build a TCG Store, Part 7: Turning the Space Into Our Store

Time for another Common Lands check-in.

Last we left off, we introduced the name and the sign. Finally something physical we could point to friends, family…anybody. (Everyone has follow-up questions when you say I sell pokemon cards.)

But if you leaned in and looked through the shop windows, you'd still see an empty space.

But that's been changing.

First up: the checkout counter is in.

A shop essential. This is where product lands, conversations happen, and transactions close. Not quite the heart of the store, but definitely an anchor.

Along the wall behind it, we've got slat wall installed - still empty, but not for long.

We've also got 3 tiered display tables set up - ready and waiting for our goods.

And by the end of the week, the TVs, currently sitting in boxes, will be mounted. We're irrationally excited about the TVs. Of course we'll be using them to roll out promos and highlight deals - but we're also planning to use them for events. Displaying draft matchups, countdown timers, standings. The goal is to make events feel organized, polished, and just, better.

We also made the pilgrimage to IKEA.

I know, I know. We tried to resist.

We looked at commercial furniture stores, but either it didn't fit the aesthetic, or it came with a price tag that made no sense for something that's going to see sweaty hands and spilled energy drinks.

But more important than where to buy is what to buy.

Gaming tables and chairs.

The tables need to be wide. Enough room for playmats, board games, drinks, and people leaning in. Enough space to feel comfortable, but enough tables to actually have a scene.

So we landed on 4 tables that seat 10 people each. That should get us going.

We've also been building out our team.

We've done a round of interviews and brought on a couple new faces. We're still getting to know each other (first day was yesterday!) but it's already great to have fresh energy in the mix.

And the extra hands don't hurt either.

At this point, the essentials are ordered, arriving, and falling into place.

Which means we're about to hit the fun part.

What goes on the walls?
What fills the shelves?
What makes it feel like Common Lands and not just a card shop?
